Interested in working with an artist to create a photographic exhibition about your community?
In 2010, The Aviiid Foundation invited members of the general public to join artists from the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) and Australian Centre for Photography (ACP) for a three-day workshop introducing contemporary art and photography.
Open to any member of the general public in their Third-age of living, this inaugural project marked the start of a long-term cultural partnership between the MCA and The Aviiid Foundation.
The programme included a guided visit to the MCA, introducing participants to concepts and themes within contemporary art. Australian Centre for Photography (ACP) and MCA tutors then guided participants through the technical features of a digital SLR camera and basic photographic principles, including aperture shutter speed and depth of field. Participants put their new skills into practice during a facilitated field assignment around Sydney's oldest neighbourhood, The Rocks. Their images were printed at the ACP where professional staff guided participants through the developing and photo editing process. One work per participant was then unveiled during the exhibition for family, friends and the public at the MCA on Friday 26 March 2010, as part of Seniors Week celebrations. The exhibition then toured libraries and interested communities across Australia.
Throughout the project, the participants were actively encouraged to gain skills and develop confidence in the following areas:
- contemporary art
- visual literacy
- research and analytical skills
- storyboarding and narrative skills
- imaginative and creative skills
- problem solving
- confidence and self-presentation
- photographic skills including lighting and composition
- pruducing photographs
